Editor's note: as one of the representative industries of the new generation of information technology, the Internet of things is called the third wave of the development of the world's information industry after computers and the Internet. To vigorously develop the Internet of things is of great significance for economic transformation and upgrading. In order to better understand its patent trend and development trend, the planning and development division of the state intellectual property office has conducted a technical analysis of patent subject in the field of Internet of things.

Internet of things Chinese patent applications first appeared in 1995, there are two, both from abroad, one from IBM, the other from the American personal inventor.

This Internet of things Chinese patent retrieval is from CPRS database of China Patent Office. The retrieval time is May 10, 2011, and a total of 3,542 patent applications have been retrieved. From the development trend of the number of patent applications, from 2005, the number of patent applications in this field began to grow rapidly, and from 2007, the number of domestic applications began to grow significantly, which is consistent with the start of the development of the Internet of things technology in China.

In 2005, the application entered the high growth stage

Among 3,542 patent applications, 2,258 were filed in China and 1,284 were filed in China.Among them, there are 168 valid patent applications in China and 303 in China.

Compared with the number of invention patent applications in the actual trial, there are 914 domestic applications and 741 overseas applications in China. The domestic applications have a little advantage. However, considering that 64% of foreign applications to China are PCT applications, and the long time for the public to enter the national stage, the advantages of foreign inventions to China are still obvious.

From the perspective of patent application type, 40% of domestic applications are utility models. For high-tech technologies like the Internet of things, simple utility model protection is not appropriate.Iot patents also include a number of design patents, mainly for iot devices such as handheld scanning terminals. Both domestic and foreign applicants to China have designs applications, but the number is not large.

Domestic application main attack application level

The top domestic applicant is zte, which has 44 iot related patent applications.Zte began to apply for iot patents as early as 2005, and the first application has been granted.Currently, zte has 9 invention patents in effect, 3 utility model patents in effect and 26 invention patent applications in actual trial. The subject of invention applied for patent involves the management, use and configuration of hardware terminals such as mobile anti-theft, payment, setting of home Internet of things, distribution of RFID tags, access and communication.

Among the domestic applicants, we have seen a large number of examples of the application of iot technology in real life. For example, Beijing zhongshi xinhua technology co., ltd. has applied for 18 patents related to the Internet of things, and achieved the traceability and logistics process management of agricultural products through the RFID technology of the Internet of things.Beijing jinxinke software development co., ltd. applied for 19 patents related to documents with RFID tags.Sichuan yibin wuliangye group co., ltd. has applied for 6 patents related to the Internet of things, among which 5 utility models have been authorized, and 1 invention patent application is still under substantive examination. The invention content is how to apply RFID tags to achieve product anti-counterfeiting.The authenticity of wuliangye wine can be judged by tearing the RFID tag.

Foreign applications to China focus on basic chips

International giants such as IBM, Hitachi, philips, NXP, Intel and samsung have come to China to apply for iot related patents.According to the above analysis, the patent right of effective invention in foreign countries is nearly double that in China.IBM has applied for RFID related patents in China since 1995. Currently, it has obtained 12 patents for the invention of the Internet of things in China, and 23 patents for invention during the actual examination. These patents cover not only the hardware structure of the equipment of the Internet of things, but also the application of the Internet of things.

The number one technology topic is about the chip structure of the sensor and RFID equipment used in the Internet of things, which has a strong foundation.Through data analysis, we believe that foreign patent applications in China are more focused on the protection of the basic equipment of the Internet of things. The methods of reading, storing, and answering data from the underlying chip, label infrastructure, are the main contents of the invention. The application of iot in foreign countries is characterized by the application of anti-theft and anti-intrusion.

The technology subject with the largest number of patent applications in China is mainly the second-level research and development of iot devices such as reading and storage of data using underlying chips. It also depends on the underlying chip at the first level. In addition, domestic application attaches more importance to the research and development of the application of the Internet of things, such as the application of attendance card printing machine, the application of factory control, and the application of the information collection and processing feedback system of the Internet of things for health care, tourism and consultation. The domestic application features more research and development on the data transmission collected by the Internet of things, such as the configuration of data transmission and the antenna of communication transmission.

Domestic application for chip circuit assembly involved. However, there are 99 applications under relevant classification number, and 57 applications are utility models. Most of them involve relatively simple technologies, and they are inventions that make use of existing chips. The design of the underlying chip needs to rely on the strong chip manufacturing capacity, but China's manufacturing base is still relatively weak in this regard, so it is necessary to remind the industry to pay high attention to this situation, in this case, in order to avoid the passive situation of high patent fees after the purchase of parts for DVD assembly, we should make early preparations.Obtain patent license early before industrialization and application are fully developed.

    Industry background

    The next trillion-level communications

The industrial chain of the Internet of things can be divided into four links: logo, perception, processing and information transmission. The key technologies of each link are RFID, sensor, smart chip and wireless transmission network of telecom operators.According to the analysis of EPOSS (European intelligent system integration technology platform) in its report, the development of the Internet of things will go through four stages in the future. Before 2010, RFID was widely used in logistics, retail and pharmaceutical fields.

At present, RFID, MEMS and other iot technologies are becoming the most concerned technologies in the market.Worldwide sales of MEMS based semiconductor sensors and actuators are expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 19% between 2007 and 2012, according to the market research firm.

Forrester, a us-based consultancy, predicts that the Internet of things business will be 30 to 1 in the world by 2020, compared with the business of person-to-person communications, so the "Internet of things" is called the next trillion-level communication.
